Henry Driftwood

Photographer Profile

“Who is Henry Driftwood?
My grandmother was a clothing designer, so I grew up surrounded by the fashion world and beauty. In fact, I learned how to draw women from her magazines. I studied design and figure drawing in art school, with a few photography classes sprinkled in.

However, it took a while before I delved seriously into figure photography. I resisted the call because there were several photographers in my circle that I respected, and gave them the job. But, often when we worked on a project, they never seemed to capture what I saw as the obvious shot. I finally had enough one day and grabbed the camera myself.

I began to achieve success and recognition for my efforts. I think part of that success is because I understand that there is more to beauty than the physical body. There is also the personality, as well as the energy of a soul ready to burst forth. Such soulful energy is a real challenge to capture in a fleeting moment of time. The search for that moment is why I create.

And if, through the creative process, some transcendence is reached- by the model, free to be expressive as she wants; by the artist, creating something sublime beyond his abilities; or by the audience, being moved physically, mentally, or spiritually- then I have achieved my dream.

Perhaps my goals are a bit lofty, but as they say- ‘If you shoot for the stars, you’re sure to reach Venus.”
